Background: Uremic pruritus (UP), also known as chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus (CKD-aP), is a highly prevalent and distressing complication in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Despite its significant impact on quality of life, sleep, and mental health, the underlying pathophysiology remains multifactorial and incompletely understood. Emerging evidence has highlighted a pivotal role for interleukin-31 (IL-31), a Th2-derived pruritogenic cytokine, in mediating chronic itch in this population.
